Pepperdine Seeks to Fill University Chaplain Role

Pepperdine University invites nominations and applications for the position of University Chaplain. The chaplain provides leadership in worship and pastoral care to members of the University community—including students, faculty, and staff. The chaplain’s office plans selected worship services during the academic year and sponsors or leads a variety of ministry activities including prayer services, devotionals, retreats, faith forums, seasonal observances, memorial services, student-led ministries, and the training of student spiritual life advisors. The chaplain serves on the University Spiritual Life Committee and chairs the Student Affairs Spiritual Life Committee, contributing to the vision for spiritual life and providing leadership for co-curricular spiritual development programs. The chaplain directly supervises the associate chaplain and the director of convocation. The chaplain works closely with various departments in Student Affairs, Human Resources, the Center for Faith and Learning, and the campus ministry programs of the University Church of Christ. The chaplain reports to the Dean of Student Affairs and works closely with the University Provost and academic deans.

Applicants must be active members of a congregation of the Churches of Christ. He or she must hold, minimally, a master’s degree in Bible, theology, ministry, religion, or a related field. The ideal candidate will have significant experience and expertise in teaching and ministry; will demonstrate a capacity to plan and lead thoughtful, biblically centered worship; and will have the skills and compassion to provide mature pastoral care to members of the community in times of crisis. The capacity to relate effectively to university students is especially important. Work experience in a university setting is preferred. The ideal candidate will have a mature understanding of Christian spirituality and practical experience in spiritual formation within an academic setting.

 Nominations are welcome and will be most helpful if they address how the nominee meets the qualifications described above. Applications should include a cover letter which describes the applicant’s philosophy of ministry and spiritual formation in a university setting. Applicants should also include a vitae and recording of a public presentation. Screening of applicants will begin June 12, 2013. The position will remain open until filled.
